Frequently asked questions on Vigilis-Bio's biodegradability

Vigilis-Bio is leading the way with advanced new technology for a future forestry industry free from plastic waste.  Understandably, those who care about the environment and plastic pollution as much as we do will have questions on its credentials.

In partnership with Biome BioplasticsSuregreen answer your most-asked questions:

What are the materials of construction of Vigilis-Bio?

Vigilis-Bio is made from a proprietary mixture of biomaterials (bio-based and biodegradable polymers), mineral fillers and functional additives/colours.  This combination has been chosen to provide the required functional performance and end-of-life biodegradation behaviour whilst minimising environmental impact during their manufacture.

Are the Vigilis-Bio tree shelters "Plastic Free"?

There is no official definition for "Plastic Free", however, under A Plastic Planet's definition here, the materials of manufacture of Vigilis-Bio can be considered "Plastic Free".

How can you be sure that your materials will actually biodegrade?

ISO standard biodegradation testing measures the conversion by microorganisms of the carbon from the material into CO2 and biomass.  This testing is carried out on fragmented Vigilis-Bio material put in contact with natural samples of soil containing microorganisms.

Are you going to provide third party certification as to the biodegradation?

Our field testing portfolio contains materials whose biodegradation has either already been tested to ISO 17566 (a method for determining the ultimate aerobic biodegradability of plastic materials in soils) or where such testing is being undertaken (in the expectation of a positive result).  Third party results resulting from such testing will be provided to customers and other interested parties in due course.

How can I take part in the field trials?

To take part in the field trials, or for more information, please contact our Technical Sales Manager, Tim Oliver, on tim.oliver@sure-green.com.
