MOT Type 1 is one of the most commonly used construction sub bases, which complies with the Department of Transport Specification for Highway Works, Clause 803 (SHW 803). This limestone sub base is crushed to 40mm down to dust, creating a highly versatile aggregate containing a range of particle sizes that is easy to compact, with excellent load-bearing qualities. This makes MOT Type 1 ideal for use as a sub base where vehicular access is required, such as highways, car parks, emergency access routes and driveways.
MOT Type 3 complies with the Department of Transport Specification for Highway Works, Clause 805 (SHW 805). Whilst MOT Type 3 may look visually similar to Type 1, it is very different from a technical standpoint, as it is the most widely approved sub base where a SuDs (Sustainable Urban Drainage Systems) legislation is imposed when constructing permeable surfaces. Therefore, this limestone sub base is often used for landscaping projects where a lower fine content is required for improved drainage, such as sports pitches, equestrian centres, hard standing pitches, artificial grassed areas, patios and roads.
