It can be a fun and rewarding project for both you and your feline friends. Already know what you need? Head straight to our catio category page, where you'll find a range of products purrfect for the job!

Here's our guide on what you'll need, with a 'shopping list' at the bottom of the post:

1. Planning and Design

  • Space: Determine the location and size of the catio. Common options include windows, patios, balconies, or standalone units in a yard.
  • Type: Decide on the type of catio (e.g., window box, balcony enclosure, or full-sized outdoor run).
  • Design: Sketch a basic design for your catio, considering how it will connect to your home, entry and exit points for cats, and areas for them to explore and relax.

2. Materials

  • Frame:
    • Wood: Pressure-treated wood is a good option for outdoor durability. This is a popular choice for catios as it adds a more natural aesthetic to outdoor spaces.
    • Metal: Aluminum or galvanised steel can provide a strong, rust-resistant frame. Be mindful that these materials may reach incredibly high temperatures if facing the sun.
  • Screening:
    • Wire Mesh: Sturdy mesh or chicken wire to keep cats in the enclosure and predators out. Make sure the mesh is fine enough to prevent paws from getting stuck.
    • Netting: For added security, especially if your cats are small or particularly curious.
  • Roof:
    • Solid Roof: Provides shade and protection from the elements, so your cats can anjoy their outside playpen whatever the weather.
    • Mesh Roof: Offers protection while still allowing sunlight and fresh air.
  • Flooring:
    • Natural Ground: Grass, dirt, or mulch are great natural flooring for a catio.
    • Raised Flooring: Wood decking or outdoor tiles for easier cleaning and maintenance.

3. Tools

  • Measuring Tape: To measure materials and space for your catio accurately.
  • Saw: For cutting wood or metal to size.
  • Drill and Screws: For assembling the frame for your catio and securing the mesh.
  • Staple Gun: To attach wire mesh to the frame securely.
  • Level: To ensure everything is straight and even.
  • Safety Gear: Gloves, goggles, and masks are used for protection during the catio construction.

Additional Features

  • Shelves and Platforms: To create vertical spaces for climbing and lounging.
  • Cat-safe Plants: Bring in elements of nature to the catio, by adding some greenery that's safe for cats to interact with.
  • Toys and Enrichment: Scratching posts, hanging toys, and other items to keep cats entertained while in their outdoor enclosure.
  • Weatherproofing: Consider adding UV-resistant paint, sealant, or covers to protect the structure and your cats from the elements.

4. Assembly Tips

  • Sturdy Construction: Ensure all parts of the catio are securely fastened to prevent collapse or escape.
  • Access Points: Include doors or hatches for easy access for cleaning and maintenance.
  • Safety: Check for sharp edges or potential hazards that could harm your cats.

Don't forget: Legal Considerations

  • Local Regulations: Check local building rules regarding outdoor structures before planning/ constructing your catio.
  • Property Boundaries: Ensure your catio doesn't encroach on neighboring properties.

By carefully planning and choosing the right materials, you can create a safe and enjoyable outdoor space for your cats to enjoy the outdoors while staying protected.
