What is the best timber for a deck?
There are various types of wood that can be used for decking, all of which impact the overall lifetime and durability of the deck. Redwood is ideal for use in outdoor decks, as it is naturally resistant to moisture rot and insects. This resistance comes from the natural oils and tannins, which also give redwood its natural beauty. Traditional timber decking requires yearly maintenance to offer a life expectancy of 5-10 years.
Do you need planning permission for decking in the UK?
Providing the decking is no more than 30cm above the ground, planning permission is generally not required. We advise checking with local government legislation if you have any concerns
Can you pressure wash a deck?
Yes. Pressure washing is a quick and easy way to clean traditional timber decking. However, take caution if the timber surface has any existing damage before pressure washing.
Will decking boards rot?
Traditional timber decking boards have a 5-10 year life expetancy and requires yearly maintenance to protect the deck boards against fungal decay and rot. For longer lasting decking, try our Composite Decking that is made from 95% recycled plastics which do not rot and are UV-stabilised.
Can I leave my deck untreated?
To reach the full life expectancy of your timber deck, we advise treating the wood annually. If you prefer the natural look of the timber, opt for a clear treatment without colouring.
Is it better to paint a deck or stain it?
It is generally better to stain a deck, to avoid paint chipping. Decking oils usually contain a preservative to extend the life of the timber, offering 2-in-1 to treat the deck and achieve your preferred colour finish.
