Vigilis-VentAir Standard Tree Shelters
Recyclable tree guards featuring ventilation holes to enhance airflow and allow more light to reach the plants.
About Vigilis-VentAir Tree Shelters
The Vigilis-VentAir Tree Shelters are durable, twin-walled cylindrical guards featuring ventilation holes in the top two-thirds for enhanced airflow and light exposure. These shelters provide essential protection to young saplings, supporting healthy root growth, trunk development, and natural wind adaptation.
Designed with a vented structure, they promote airflow and light transmission, allowing trees to build resilience and establish strong root systems. Manufactured from recyclable, UV-stabilized, and photodegradable polypropylene with up to 30% recycled material, VentAir shelters are environmentally conscious and built to last.
Available in four standard sizes (0.6m, 0.75m, 1.2m, and 1.5m) with diameters between 73mm and 110mm, they are nested in groups of five and bundled in packs of 100 for easy handling and transport.
Features of the Product
Twin-Walled & Flared Rim - This design ensures that the tree shelter is both strong and lightweight, with a flared rim to reduce stem abrasion and protect the tree as it grows.
Laser Lines - The laser line enables the shelter to naturally split open as the tree grows.
Relesable Cable Ties - Comes pre-fitted with releasable and reusable cable ties.
Nests of 5 - Packaged in sets of 5 for convenient storage and transportation.
VentAir Design - Vigilis VentAir shelters feature perforated holes to enhance airflow, increase light transmission, and help young trees acclimate to windy conditions.
Macro Vented - Vigilis also offer Macro Vented Tree Shelters, designed specifically for warmer climates, allowing for greater ventilation to help trees acclimate more effectively.
Heights to be considered
Determine the specific animal you want to protect your plants from, as this will guide the required height and support stake for effective protection. Based on the chosen height, tree shelters can provide defence against voles, rabbits, hares, and deer.
Rabbits - 0.6m
Hares - 0.75m
Muntjac deer - 1.2m
Fallow deer - 1.5m
Red deer - 1.8m
How Vigilis Vent-Air helps your trees
The vented design supports stronger root development and promotes trunk growth by enabling trees to adapt to the natural wind-rock of their environment.
- Provides enhanced root and trunk development compared to standard shelters.
-
Offers protection against browsing animals.
- Improves plant localisation during the early stages of plantation.
- Prevents abrasive damage to the stem thanks to the flared top rim.
Frequently Asked Questions
Why use tree shelters?
Tree shelters promote healthy growth and improve young trees' survival by offering:
- Protection from browsing animals
- Increased tree survival rates
- Defense against harsh weather and environmental conditions
- A supportive microclimate with ideal temperature, carbon dioxide levels, moisture, light spectrum, and intensity for optimal growth
Are there any downsides to using tree shelters?
Tree shelters play a crucial role in promoting optimal tree growth. However, conventional shelters made from polypropylene contribute to plastic waste in forests and require retrieval at the end of their use. Soil-biodegradable tree shelters represent the future of sustainable forestry, decomposing naturally onsite and leaving only water, minerals, and biomass behind.
What is the difference between using standard and vented tree shelters?
Both types are made from UV-stabilised, photodegradable polypropylene with a durable twin-wall construction, featuring flared rims, laser lines, and pre-fitted, releasable cable ties. Vented tree shelters include perforated holes in the upper two-thirds, allowing air circulation that acclimates trees to harsh winds and environmental conditions. This ventilation supports strong trunk and root development, making vented shelters especially suitable for windy and exposed areas.
What are biodegradable tree shelters?
Vigilis-Bio biodegradable tree shelters are a cutting-edge, plastic-free solution made from a unique blend of bio-based derivatives—potatoes, wood, and corn—combined with a custom biodegradable polymer. These shelters perform comparably to traditional options, offering 5 years of growth protection, then disintegrating within 6–12 months. They fully biodegrade in the soil over the following 2 years, leaving only water, minerals, and biomass, which nourish soil microbes.
