Ground Stabilisation Mesh - Case Study

Challenge

Over many years, car parking for events held on grass land at Mill Piece Pond and at Conisbrough Castle had proved to be troublesome. Although used sparingly throughout the year for events, including Guy Fawkes Night, the only viable option was to park on grass land where the soil was very clay in nature and has a high water table. Cars often got stuck and had to be pulled out, and events have even had to be called off in the past.

They very much wanted to keep a natural look by maintaining a grass cover, so tarmac and concrete were out of the question. The cost was also a key issue in making a decision and had to be kept minimal.

Solution

GR14 grass reinforcement mesh was selected as the most suitable and cost-effective solution.

GR14 provides permanent protection by reinforcing grassed areas so that it can easily withstand traffic damage from vehicles and pedestrians. The heavy-grade mesh allows prolonged year-round use of grass parking areas and is SuDS-compliant.

One of the key benefits of our grass reinforcement mesh is that once it has fully entangled with the grass, and the grass has fully grown through, the mesh becomes virtually invisible. This would allow the client to maintain their grass cover and keep the desired natural look of the area.

The grass reinforcement mesh was installed over the course of a few days by local volunteers onto the existing grass following our installation guide.  The mesh was then encouraged to entangle with and become bonded with the roots of the grass, and the client ensured that the grass was fertilised and cut regularly.

Benefits

Doncaster now has a large parking area which can be used throughout the year for their events. The dual objectives of keeping the grass looking like grass and the costs to a minimum were achieved. GR14 Grass Reinforcement creates no extra runoff allowing all rainfall to percolate naturally into the water table.
