SuDs at a glance: what you need for 2024.

SuDS legislation at a glance blog top imageThe SuDs legislation changes you need to know – at a glance.

New SUDs requirements are likely to be brought into force in 2024, so make sure you’re familiar with what they involve.

Sustainable drainage systems (SuDS) offer a more natural approach to managing drainage systems in and around properties and developments than traditional drainage systems. They are designed to temporarily store water during storm events, reduce peak flows and reduce surface water runoff, by mimicking the natural cycle of water management by retaining water where it lands.

The government has recommended that sustainable drainage systems (SuDS) become mandatory for new developments in England from 2024. The recommendation follows a review into sustainable drainage provisions of the Flood and Water Management Act of 2010 and forms part of a government plan to reduce sewage outflows into rivers, published last year following growing public pressure on the issue.

Major changes at a glance:

  1. Starting in 2024, most new buildings in England must have SuDS plan. Before building, you'll need permission from a SuDS Approval Body, even if you don't need planning permission.
  2. Connecting surface water run-off to public sewers will no longer be a right – instead, it will be conditional on the approval of the drainage system plans by the SAB (SuDS Approval Body).

More about SuDS:

Key types of SUDs management: Source control: reducing initial run-off when water hits the ground. Site control: managing surface water run-off. Regional control: dealing with the gathered run-off of a larger area

Benefits: Preventing floods by building in safer areas, cleaning water to reduce pollution's harm, mixing nature with city areas to create parks and homes for wildlife, saving water by collecting rain for reuse, making better communities with beautiful public spaces, and helping development by upgrading drainage systems.

Here at Origin Suregreen Limited, we have several SuDs compliant products, focused on source control. Our paving grids (can be used with grass or gravel) cover areas to reinforce ground and allow better drainage.
