Frequently Asked Questions on Weed-Defenda

Landscaping fabrics such as weed control membranes are a garden landscapers essential for suppressing weed growth without the need for harsh chemicals.  Here, we'll be providing you with all the answers to our frequently asked questions on weed control fabric so that you can spend more time gardening and less time worrying about weeds!

How do I lay weed control fabric?

To install our weed control fabric, we recommend removing all vegetation before clearing and levelling the soil. Next, lay the weed control fabric over the soil and secure using u-pins or plastic pegs. If you require more than one row of fabric, overlap the pieces by at least 6 inches to prevent weeds from growing through the seams. We then recommend covering the fabric with a generous layer of mulch (approx. 5cm) or aggregate (4cm) within 24 hours of laying the fabric. Check out our full installation guide here.

What is weed control fabric made from?

Our weed control fabric is made from spunbond polypropylene, giving the fabric superior strength and durability to suppress and control weeds in a wide range of gardening and landscaping applications. The spunbond process involves filaments of polypropylene spun into a multidirectional net that is thermally bonded together to provide air and water permeability. This means that while weed growth is blocked, water and nutrients can drain away freely into the soil, helping to retain moisture.

Why use weed control fabric?

Weed control fabric contributes to low maintenance gardening by controlling weeds in flower and vegetable beds, between patios and paths and under decked areas. Our weed control fabrics are permeable, meaning they suppress and control weed growth but still allow water, moisture and nutrients to penetrate through to the soil below.

What is the purpose of landscape fabric?

Landscape fabric, often referred to as weed control fabric, is a permeable geotextile membrane used to suppress and control weeds while allowing water, moisture and nutrients to reach the soil.

When should you use landscape fabric?

Our weed control fabric can be used for a wide range of gardening and landscaping applications, including: flower beds and borders, lining planters, aggregate and scree areas, vegetable gardens, play areas under mulch, under slabs on domestic patios and under decked areas. Using landscape fabric will effectively suppress and control weeds without the need for harsh chemicals or weed killers, contributing to low maintenance gardening.

Should landscape fabric go under gravel?

Yes. Our weed control fabric is commonly used under gravel for garden pathways, patios and borders. Using landscape fabric under gravel will act as a barrier to prevent weed growth, as well as being used to keep mud, sub-bases and aggregates separate during wet weather.

Does landscape fabric let water through?

Yes. Our permeable weed control landscape fabric allows water, air and nutrients to penetrate through to the soil below. This helps to retain moisture in the soil and allows excess water to drain away freely.

Can I put landscape fabric over weeds?

Yes. Our heavy duty weed control fabric acts as a barrier to prevent Rhizome and weed growth. However, we do recommend removing all vegetation prior to laying the weed control fabric.
