Moorland Protection Mesh

SUREGREEN MM14 Moorland Reinforcement Mesh is a thick plastic mesh that provides a reinforced access road over moors and soft boggy areas. The mesh allows the native moorland plants to grow through the mesh whilst providing a stable access road

A large proportion of the Moorland throughout the UK is protected under triple SI regulations and other areas have many restrictions as to the type of access road – hard-core road for example - that can be laid to allow shoots and general husbandry to take place.  Moorland areas, because of the short growing times, fragile ecology and outstanding natural beauty are rigorously protected and monitored. What was needed was a product that would allow access to the Moorland Mesh by mechanical means – usually an Argocat – that would give very little or no impact to the natural Flora and Fauna and would assimilate with the native vegetation.  Further to these needs the mesh when laid and in situ, has to not to have any toxic effects and be chemically neutral at any time in the future.

To meet all these demands SUREGREEN MM14 Moorland Protection Mesh was designed and then developed. The plastic mesh made is wide enough (2.5m), to allow relatively safe passage over the moorland.  MM14 Moorland Mesh is robust enough to handle the movements of an Argocat and is flexible enough to drape over the surface of the undulating moorland, (normally peat but could also be harder ground). In addition, when laid, the thick plastic mesh needs to allow almost complete entanglement of the often woody and fibrous natural to disappear into the background and to give extra structure and strength to the access road. MM14 Moorland Reinforcement Mesh also has been developed from completely inert UV stabilized specially selected plastics that will not rot or give off undesired chemicals.

SUREGREEN MM14 Moorland Mesh is usually installed by pinning down the mesh to the underlying top surface.  The practice of pinning down until the peat / natural vegetation takes over and hold the mesh in place,  often has to be evaluated on a case by case basis.  The variations of depth, type and slopes will vary from site to site.  Type of pins used, thickness and frequency of application will often need to be tailored to meet the needs of the access road requirements.
